“When my parents moved to California at the close of WWII and started
a family, like many African Americans they came in search of the "promised
land." Back then there wasn't a single Black policeman, fireman, public school
teacher, or newspaper reporter in the whole city. While San Francisco
may not have had Jim Crow laws on the books, the everyday experience of African
Americans was living proof of how the structures of racism locked a whole
community out of resources and opportunities.”
