About the Young People's Project

The Young People's Project (YPP) in partnership with the Algebra Project (AP), is committed to the creation of mathematically literate communities through the recruitment and training of a core of Math Literacy Workers. These MLWs focus on developing their knowledge and skills capacity so that they are able to organize and manage math literacy work independently. In the process they become teachers, peer leaders, and cultural catalysts in the development of ever-expanding networks of mathematically literate young people.

The Young People's Project (YPP) also organizes young people to radically change their education and the way they relate to it. According to Omo Moses, the 28 year-old son of Bob Moses and one of the co-founders of YPP, "The goal of the YPP training process is to enable MLWs to develop math skills in a way that builds a culture of youth leadership, ownership, and teamwork. We also attempt to produce young people who can effectively teach, mentor and tutor other students."

In today's information age, math literacy plays a critical role in young people's pursuit of higher education, career and employment choices. Reflecting the philosophy of the Civil Rights Movement, YPP believes that systemic change within schools can enable all children, including low income children and children of color, to complete college preparatory math. However, they believe this will not occur until young people themselves demand the right to receive a quality education. The YPP is working to create that demand.
